“I know I said Claude would be our last stop,” Alex said, “but I think we have time to do one more.”

“I’m game.” I clicked my seatbelt and handed Needles another pinch of cinnamon roll.

Violet Fairland lived on the east side of town, so it was an easy stop to make on our way back to the castle. The street she lived on was one of the oldest in town as evidenced by the cobblestone road we now bumped down. The trees that lined both sides of the street were large and old—as were the houses. There were beautiful Victorian houses with gingerbread trim and Colonial cottages with charming dormer windows. Unfortunately, most were in various states of decay and disrepair.

“This is the woman who used to be a baker?” Needles mused as he flew inside my pocket.

“It’s probably her mom or grandmother,” I said, closing the passenger-side door.

Slipping my scarf over my face, I huddled down and pressed forward against the driving wind. Alex helped me up the porch steps, then knocked on the door. A few seconds later, the front door was opened by an elderly fairy with curly white hair, silver glasses, and dressed in a flannel housecoat. I vaguely recognized her from my youth.

“Hello.” Her voice was soft and had a slight warble. “Am I having visitors today? I didn’t remember. Come in. Come in. Oh, I do love having visitors.”

I arched an eyebrow at Alex before stepping inside the slightly rundown Victorian. Like the outside, the inside looked to be neglected and in need of small repairs.

The elderly fairy closed the door, and when she turned to us, her face registered surprise. “Oh, hello. Am I having visitors today? It must have slipped my mind. Who are you again, dear?”

“I’m Shayla Loci-Stone. My grandma is GiGi, and my mother is Serenity.”

“Oh, yes. I remember.” Her brows furrowed and a glassy look came into her eyes. “I think. Do I know you, dear?”

I was beginning to understand a little more of the situation.

“Granny! Where are you?” a female voice called from another room. “You forgot your pills on the kitchen counter.”

“Oh, dear me.” The elderly fairy said, nervously patting her hair and face. “I forgot my pills.”

“Granny! Where are—oh.” A compact woman with a stocky build stopped short when she saw us. “What’s going on?”

“Are you Violet Fairland?” I asked.

“Yeah. Who are you?”

“I’m Agent Shayla Loci-Stone, and this is Sheriff Stone.” I gave her a small smile. “We’d like to speak to you for a second, please.”

Violet sighed. “Sure. Granny, you need to go to the kitchen and take your meds.”

The elderly fairy patted my arm. “I love going to the kitchen.”

“Go on in and take the pills on the counter,” Violet said. “I’ll be in shortly.”

“Of course, dear. I’ll go in and…Oh, yes. I’ll go in and take my pills.”

We watched her shuffle slowly out of the room, humming softly to herself. When she disappeared from sight, Violet turned back to us.

“If this is about Clarissa’s sister, she’s already called me and told me the horrible news.
